Hello! My name is Jessica Tu. I am a first generation Chinese-Australian, born and raised in Melbourne. I'm currently studying at Monash University doing a double degree in Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and Bachelor of Visual Arts.
My main practice is in drawing, but I aim to dabble in areas such as photography and textiles. My inspiration for photography (despite my limited amount of works) is Gregory Crewdson, who carefully curates the use of lighting to create visuals that appear as dramatic cinematic screenshots.
The main theme of my recent works look at youth experiences oriented around being a first-generation experiencing generational trauma and abuse. This platform outlines my privilege, being university-educated and able-bodied to create content that involves researching, recognising and understanding how my existence in this world has been shaped and how my existence can shape the world around me. I am also interested in the concept of observing. Whether it be the body of a deceased being, or the shift of my own body for every meal I consume, and for every position I form.
I am very well aware of how literal my works are. My current focus is to sharpen my skills, specifically with drawing, to bring detail and realism to the forefront.
I currently run another page with other WOC called Angel Hood. The aim is to create a platform where we can comfortably use the space to share our works.
